Cosmetic Fillings
A filling is the name of a dental procedure in which a material such as silver amalgam or a composite (white) filling is used to treat a decayed tooth. This material is inserted into the tooth where it then prevents the further spread of decay or repairs any damage.
Fillings are used when your tooth has a cavity. We will remove the decay of your tooth and replace it with a filling to protect the tooth from further damage caused by the cavity.
Tooth Colored Fillings vs Silver Amalgam
Composite fillings have a natural color similar to the color of your teeth and so it blends better. Silver amalgam fillings can last longer than composite fillings but there are many studies being done on the dangers of mercury in your body from the amalgam filling. Research has also shown that amalgams fillings over time have caused fractures or cracks in teeth and may eventually need crowns, root canals, or implants when a piece of tooth breaks off.
